Involved in NRC/RES Severe Accident and Accident Analysis Research programs over the last 10 years.
ERI has served as prime contractor for three major NRC/RES initiatives. The main focus of these multi-year, multi-task research programs has been on the assessment of computer codes,
peer review of specific models, independent reviews, confirmatory analyses, and analysis of specific issues (i.e., core-concrete interactions, hydrogen combustion, DCH, etc.)
During CY2000 ERI was awarded a competitive grant by US Department of Energy in the development of a Small
(50 to 300 MWe) Advanced Reactor Technology (SMART) passive nuclear power plant.
The resulting Generation IV nuclear power plant has the following characteristics:
Long refueling cycles (>10 years)
Proliferation resistant fuel
Modular
Inclusion of severe accidents an integral part of the design basis envelope
Indefinite passive decay heat removal capability
Price competitive
